Weird and Wild Oregon: Fort Rock #Photography #NaturePhotography

Fort Rock is the remains of an ancient volcano in the middle of Oregon. Dozens of sandals were discovered below a layer of volcanic ash that was determined to come from an eruption 7500 years ago.

50,000-100,000 years ago, the high walls of the old volcano marked the shore of a vast lake. The ground in the Great Basin is often silty/sandy, so that makes sense.

Weird and Wild #Oregon : Flowers in the Desert #NaturePhotography

It’s nice to take a road less taken into the quiet and wonder this planet has to offer. From the road, it may all look uniform and bland, but if you take a turn and a stop to really experience a place, you can find unexpected pleasures. One of the most beautiful things about a place with no other people is the quiet. When it’s so quiet, you can hear the Earth hum, well, that’s special.

This little water hole had flowers growing in the water. Neat!

*A junction erupts between the worlds in Settler, Oregon, a rift from which horrors attack our world. The Rifters defend us.

To trust unquestioningly is the first lesson Daelin Long must learn as the newest Initiate of the Rifters.

Her first day is a disaster. She stands on a deserted street in a town smaller than a city district, courting killer rocks from another world with her ancestor from the Revolutionary War. Normal no longer exists.

While she struggles, Earl Blacke grapples with atoning for his past ill deeds, running far and fast from Settler, Oregon. The Shaman of the Desert promises him redemption, and an old mine puts the possibility of a gold strike in his grasp. His luck has changed for the better, but he can’t have both.

A Spring Trip to Sand Spring: Wonderful and Weird #Oregon #Explore

What’s great about 4-wheel drive? When I see a sign to an offbeat place on a dirt road, I can go see what’s there. That was the case when we saw the sign for Sand Spring.

“Well, let’s go see what’s there,” we said.

Not everything is as it’s advertised, but there was actually a spring there.

An unseen spring trickles water to the fenced pond. Sagebrush shrubland borders the pond, and dry forest surrounds the shrubland. It’s a long way to the next drink, so this site draws wildlife like a magnet.

We saw some wildlife that wasn’t so spry.

There was some interesting landscape around it. The ground was pebbly and white, which is different than the usually sandy dirt in the high desert.

Close up, it was even cooler.
