There is so much to love about this story.

First, the title shouted, “Read me,” at me, and once I cracked it open, I wasn’t disappointed. The pages are packed with creativity, twists, secrets, and just the right amount of magical mayhem to keep things delightfully off balance.
The novel follows a small, secretive group in London who watch over magical objects, keeping them out of society where they could cause real harm. They receive a message from someone who knows exactly who they are and what they do, reporting a newly discovered object that needs to be retrieved. The problem is the society hasn’t collected an item in years, and none of them are equipped to take on this task. Plus, this mysterious person who knows of them may be dangerous.
What I loved most is that the characters rely on wits over brawn. No chosen one. Just smart, scrappy people trying to outthink magical chaos. The worldbuilding is delicious, layered and mysterious without ever feeling heavy. The characters are fun and quirky, and the plot keeps unfolding in satisfying, surprising ways.
The author plants just enough clues that when a twist hits, I found myself thinking, I should have figured that out. I love when a story invites me in like that and trusts me to play along.
What didn’t work quite as well for me were some of the extra POVs. A few chapters from the villains felt unnecessary, and I think the story would have been stronger and more intimate if we’d stayed closer to the main character and discovered that information alongside them. But honestly, that’s a small gripe in an otherwise very enjoyable read.
By the end, it definitely feels like there’s more story to come, and I’m crossing my fingers for a sequel because I would happily spend more time with this odd little society and their dangerous collection.
If you love clever magic, secret organizations, and character driven fantasy with a slightly chaotic streak, this one’s a treat.
