The Recruit, A Rifters Adventure

Charming Moon Knight seems like she has her future all figured out. A safe, predictable career in paleontology with options for steady teaching jobs or staying in academia. But that’s not what she craves. Instead of lecture halls, Charming yearns for the excitement of discovery, the thrill of fieldwork, and the untold mysteries of the past.

When an unexpected invitation arrives from the Paleo Institute in Settler, Oregon, promising hands-on fieldwork and the opportunity to study Mesozoic marine dinosaurs, Charming can’t resist the lure of something more. Settler is a quiet town nestled within an ancient caldera—peaceful, serene, and seemingly perfect. But as Charming’s arrival stirs strange visions and an undeniable connection to the enigmatic Earl Blacke, she begins to suspect that this sleepy little town might not be what it seems.

As Charming delves deeper into the community, she uncovers a truth hidden beneath the surface: Settler is guarding a portal—a rift in the forest where creatures from other universes slip through. And all the while, a group known as the Rifters watches over this fragile world, ensuring that nothing slips through that shouldn’t.

But for Charming, this quiet town might be more than just a place for fieldwork—it could be her destiny, if she’s willing to face the unknown and everything that comes with it.

🌹 A Court of Thorns and Roses: A Twisted and Engaging Retelling

review A court of thorns and roses

I recently finished A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, and I have to say, I’m impressed! At first, the story reminded me a lot of a retelling and reimagining of Beauty and the Beast—which, if you know me, I love. But while there are some similarities, this book brings so much more to the table than just a typical fairy-tale retelling.

A Familiar Yet Unpredictable Adventure

On the surface, A Court of Thorns and Roses follows a storyline that might seem familiar—an ordinary young woman who is thrust into a magical world and has to navigate a complicated relationship with a cursed beast. However, as you dive into the world Maas has created, you’ll quickly realize it’s so much more than that.

This is a world where fairies aren’t necessarily the kindly, whimsical creatures you might expect. Instead, they have their own agendas and aren’t always as nice as they seem. The twists and turns in this story kept me on my toes, and I loved how Maas subverted expectations at every corner. More than once, the book surprised me, and I found myself eagerly turning the pages to see what would happen next.

World-Building and Complex Characters

One of the standout features of A Court of Thorns and Roses is the world-building. Maas creates a richly detailed and immersive world that feels both magical and dangerous. The realm of the Fae is beautifully crafted, full of mystery and intrigue. I could practically feel the magic pulsing through the pages.

Equally impressive are the characters. Feyre, the protagonist, is both strong and vulnerable, with a depth that I didn’t expect. The relationships she navigates are complicated, layered with emotion and hidden motivations. This isn’t just a story about a girl and a beast—it’s a journey of survival, power, and self-discovery. The characters’ complexities added so much richness to the plot, and I found myself invested in their growth throughout the story.

Final Thoughts

Overall, A Court of Thorns and Roses is a captivating read that blends familiar fairy-tale elements with unexpected twists. With great world-building, compelling characters, and a plot full of surprises, I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure. This book has me hooked, and I’m definitely planning to read more of the series to see where it goes.

Happy reading, and here’s to more magical adventures! ✨

Looking for a fantastic mystery to put yourself in the holiday mood? I highly recommend this one!

Fantasy worth reading For Santa's Sake Harlow

This story was a true pleasure to read. It was filled with cozy, Hallmark moments with lots of feels, and I rooted for the main character to shed some of her crusty personality. Oh, and there’s murder!

The story centers around Harlow, a successful journalist at the Local Rag. One of the columnists is missing (Crystal who writes the psychic advice column) and winds up dead! Not only that, she haunts Harlow, nagging her to find her killer.

Crystal (the dead one) and Harlow are polar opposites, which results in a lot of fun and poignant moments.

I didn’t guess the killer, but I’m sometimes bad at these things. It doesn’t matter, the twists the investigation takes are fun. There’s lots of Christmas in the story, too.

I’m always willing to take whatever ride this author takes me on. I’ve enjoyed all of Gwen Gardner’s ghostly tales, and this is no exception. Keep writing, Gwen!

A fun world to get lost in!

fantasy worth reading Guardian of Monsters

The story takes place in Savannah where the supernatural world and the mundane world coexist. The overlay of the supernatural gave the novel a very gothic feel. Which I like.

The use of magic was interesting, too. The main character, Celestine, is a shifter who can shift into a wolf and also a witch who wields earth magic. She’s an artist who creates prophetic pieces of art. When the man she considers her uncle is murdered, this ability becomes a curse as wella s providing valuable clues to stop the killer.

There’s found family and romance in the story as the main character begins to realize her full potential. Oh, and then, of course, there’s a monster. I like monsters.

I recommend not missing this one!

Here’s the blurb:

Supernaturally on the case! Celestine LeBlanc and Luna Finley are the Sleuths of Shadow Salon.

Celestine, witch and wolf shifter has a talent for prophetic drawings. She’s shocked when she draws her landlord Ray with his eyes gouged out and a strange winged-mermaid leaning over him. Later she finds an eyeless Ray dead on the sidewalk. All she wanted to do was open a gallery, but first she must apprehend his killer. In a posthumous note, Ray wrote he wasn’t just a leather-smith but a supernatural pirate mage. Years back, his Jekyll crew trapped the evil Demon Three Eyes clan. Ray feared they’d escaped, were stalking him, and would soon wreak havoc on Savannah.

Oryn, a fellow student in Celestine’s continuing ed art class, is a fae and a thorn in her side, when he asks nosy questions about the case. Yet, she’s drawn to him when he’s her masseur at the spa she frequents, and he’s clever at brainstorming leads regarding Ray’s case. He insists his air magic could come in handy.

When pirates in Ray’s old crew are murdered, their body parts stolen, Celestine puts more horrifying clues together. She’ll need everyone on board, includingLuna, a mermaid asking to show her sea-glass sculptures at Celestine’s new gallery—and the very same mermaid in Celestine’s tragic drawing of Ray. Otherwise, the lethal monstrosity Demon Three Eyes is unleashing on Savannah will destroy the city and everyone in it.

#Fantasy Worth Reading: Fourth Wing #BookReview #fantasybooks #booklover

This book gave me a book hangover… because I had to finish it! Just had to!

fantasy worth reading Fourth Wing

Set within the confines of Basgiath War College, this gripping tale unfolds against the backdrop of a brutal war and the high-stakes competition to become the elite dragon riders of Navarre.

At the center of the narrative is twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail, originally destined for the Scribe Quadrant, where a quiet life among books awaited her. However, her mother, the commanding general, redirects her fate, compelling Violet to join the intense competition for dragon riders. The catch? Dragons don’t bond with “fragile” humans, and Violet’s size and physical fragility make her an unlikely candidate, facing not only the challenge of mastering the art of dragon riding but also the constant threat of being incinerated.

Yarros masterfully crafts a world where danger lurks at every corner, and the competition for survival is as fierce as the dragons themselves. The tension is palpable, especially given Violet’s physical vulnerabilities and the cutthroat nature of her fellow cadets, led by the powerful and ruthless wingleader, Xaden Riorson.

The character development is noteworthy, with Violet emerging as a resilient and intelligent protagonist. The dynamics between characters, whether friends, enemies, or potential lovers, add layers of complexity to the narrative. Each individual at Basgiath War College harbors their own agenda, creating an atmosphere where trust is scarce and alliances are fragile.

The world-building is immersive, painting a vivid picture of the war-torn kingdom, the majestic dragons, and the elite training grounds of the war college. Yarros skillfully balances the thrilling action sequences with moments of introspection, giving readers a chance to connect with the characters on a deeper level.

As the war outside escalates and the protective wards of the kingdom falter, Violet begins to unravel a dark secret. The overarching mystery adds an extra layer of intrigue to the plot, keeping me hooked until the final page.

There was something very addictive about Fourth Wing. It had some flaws… mostly some scenes were a bit verbose. Like I get it. But it was easy to flip past those to the more exciting parts. And there were lots of exciting parts. I highly recommend.

Here’s the blurb:
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away…because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.
