Book Review: The Enchanted Greenhouse

A cozy fantasy book review.

review of The enchanted greenhouse

The Enchanted Greenhouse delivers the same cozy charm that made The Spellshop so enjoyable. It is warm, gentle, and full of magical wonders. The worldbuilding and setting were my favorite parts. Belde feels inviting in a way that made me wish I could step through the page and wander its gardens.

The book has a consistently pleasant tone, and it succeeds at being a comforting read. It is exactly the kind of cozy fantasy that lets you unwind and drift through a whimsical world.

That said, a few elements kept it from reaching its full potential.

The plot holds no surprises. Nothing unfolds in an unexpected way, which weakens the sense of discovery. Cozy fantasy is my favorite branch of the genre, but even a quiet story can offer a moment or two that catches the reader off guard. This one does not.

I also found the emotions, worries, and internal thoughts of the main character to be extremely repetitive. At times, I skipped through large sections because the character circled the same ideas and emotions again and again. And again!

The characters themselves did not go as deep as I hoped. Their reactions and emotional beats often felt predictable, and sometimes I had trouble relating to the main character. I actually found her counterpart and the magical plants more compelling.

Even so, the book remains light, cute, and pleasantly low stress. Despite its flaws, it succeeds as a gentle comfort read. If you want something charming, imaginative, and easy to settle into, The Enchanted Greenhouse provides exactly that.

On the Wings of a Word by C. M. Sinner

A lyrical, Norse-myth infused fantasy where poetry has power and words can change the world.

On the wings of a word

It’s rare for a novel to make me this curious, but On the Wings of a Word sent me down a rabbit hole researching Norse mythology long after I turned the last page.

While I’m familiar with some of the myths, C. M. Sinner explores corners of the lore I hadn’t encountered before, weaving them into a story that feels both fantastical and fresh. The worldbuilding has depth without ever slowing the momentum, and every new reveal made me want to learn more.

The main character especially stood out. They have a gift with language and poetry that I honestly wish existed in real life. The idea of bringing words to life—of language itself holding tangible power—is such a cool, imaginative concept, and it’s used in clever, meaningful ways throughout the story.

What I loved most were the solutions to the dilemmas the characters faced. Instead of predictable outcomes, the story consistently surprised me with smart, unexpected turns that felt earned. Add in a cast of lovable characters and an engaging plot, and this became one of those books I didn’t want to leave.

Engaging, imaginative, and full of heart, On the Wings of a Word is a fantastic read for anyone who loves mythology-infused fantasy and the magic of language.

I’ll definitely be picking up the next book.

Hurry up and write it, C. M. Sinner.

Fantasy Worth Reading: Wheel of the Infinite by Martha Wells

Book Review: The Wheel of the Infinite by Martha Wells

fantasy worth reading

As a devoted fan of Murderbot, I decided to try another of Martha Wells’ books, and I’m glad I did. Wheel of the Infinite shows off Wells’ gift for crafting immersive, layered worlds. I slipped easily into this one, as if I was there, watching the scenes unfold.

The main character, Maskelle, is a force. She’s cranky, complex, and definitely not your typical chosen one. I loved that this wasn’t a predictable fantasy arc. The story swerved in ways I didn’t expect, keeping things fresh.

Wells shifts effortlessly between action and quiet reflection, just like in Murderbot. And while this world is vastly different from her sci-fi work, it shares that same richness of character and depth. The mix of unique magic, religious ritual, and political tension had me turning pages fast.

A great standalone for fans of complex heroines, unexpected twists, and worldbuilding with real depth.

The Spell Shop by Sarah Beth Durst

Fantasy worth reading!

Cozy fantasy is my favorite fantasy genre (along with weird stuff), and this book did not disappoint. The main character, Kiela, is rather grumpy, but I could relate to her introverted tendencies. Lots. She also loves books. Her BFF, Cal, a betwitched spider plant, balances her out.

There is romance, but the story is so much more. I wouldn’t have liked it so much without the more, and this is one of my favorite reads of the year so far. Every day, I enjoyed returning to these pages and getting lost in this charming world populated by mostly charming characters.

Found family, a little bit of magic, true friendship, a quaint island with quaint people, and a lot of heart, this novel has a lot going for it. This quiet book with a happy ending is a great balm for these trying times. The character arcs are satisfying, and the plot is entertaining. I was never bored (and I am easily bored).

This was a library borrow. I love my library.

Fantasy Worth Reading: A Sorceress Comes to Call Book Review

Book Review: A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher

A Sorceress comes to call

If you haven’t yet read T. Kingfisher, you’re missing out on one of the most delightful and twisted authors in fantasy today. A Sorceress Comes to Call is my first five-star read of the year, and it’s easy to see why. Kingfisher has a knack for introducing the unexpected, and with this story, she keeps you on your toes from start to finish.

What I Loved:

What I adore most about T. Kingfisher’s work is that she never lets you guess where she’s going with the plot. You can never predict her twists, and that’s a rare quality in fantasy. It’s one of the things I love most about her writing—it keeps me hooked and always wanting more. The characters are charming and engaging, with plenty of personality and quirks that make them feel real. The sorceress herself is an absolute joy—fun, unpredictable, and fully fleshed out in a way that only Kingfisher can pull off.

There’s a certain magic to how Kingfisher takes familiar tropes—like witches and sorceresses—and turns them on their head. This story is actually a retelling of The Goose Girl, a classic Grimm fairy tale, and Kingfisher’s spin on it is a delightful twist. While the original fairy tale is more traditional, Kingfisher brings her unique sense of humor and unpredictability to the story, making it fresh and exciting.

What I Didn’t Love:

Honestly, there wasn’t anything I didn’t love about A Sorceress Comes to Call. It hit all the right notes for me, with its delightful characters, unpredictable plot, and just the right mix of humor and suspense.

Final Thoughts:

If you enjoy a fantasy that keeps you guessing, A Sorceress Comes to Call is definitely worth reading. It’s yet another brilliant story from T. Kingfisher, filled with humor, heart, and a dose of magic. This was an easy five-star read for me, and I can’t recommend it enough.

A Delightful Journey of Surprises: Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold

review Paladin of Souls

I absolutely loved Paladin of Souls! This book was a delightful and unexpected journey that kept me hooked from start to finish.

An Original and Creative Story

What I really appreciated about this book was how it surprised me. I honestly had no idea where the story was going, and I loved that! Sometimes, it feels like the plot is so predictable, but Paladin of Souls kept me on my toes. The main character, Ista, embarks on an adventure with no idea where it will lead, and the reader gets to go on that journey with her. It’s always a joy when a book allows you to discover things as the characters do.

A Mature Heroine

One of my favorite aspects of this book is the protagonist, Ista. She’s a more mature woman who believes her best years are behind her. In fact, she’s rather cynical about her life and her abilities. But then—without giving away too much—she gets a second chance. I love that this book takes a woman of a certain age and shows her stepping into a new chapter of life. Ista’s journey is one of self-discovery, and it’s a beautiful reminder that life doesn’t stop at a certain age.

The Ragtag Group

Ista’s journey is made even more fun by the ragtag group she forms along the way. This diverse cast of characters adds so much to the story, each one bringing their own strengths, quirks, and complexities. Their relationships evolve throughout the book, and I couldn’t help but enjoy the dynamics as they worked together to solve the central mystery. The group was just as much a part of the adventure as the plot itself, and that made the book even more engaging.

Twists and Turns

Now, I’m not going to give away any spoilers (you’ll just have to read it yourself!), but I will say there were moments in the book when I genuinely said, “What?!” There were a couple of surprising twists that really caught me off guard. I love when a book can do that, and Bujold excels at keeping the reader engaged by throwing in unexpected developments.

Bujold’s Mastery Continues

I’m familiar with Lois McMaster Bujold’s work from her sci-fi series (which I own several volumes of), and I wasn’t surprised to find that her talent for weaving an engrossing story shines in this fantasy series as well. She’s a master at creating vivid worlds, complex characters, and plots that twist in ways you don’t expect. Her writing is just as sharp and engaging in Paladin of Souls as it is in her sci-fi works, and I’ll definitely be seeking out more books in this series.

No Need to Read the First Book

Although this is part of a series, I didn’t read the first book, and I don’t think it’s a requirement to enjoy this one. The story stands on its own, and I had no trouble following along or getting invested in the characters and world. Of course, now I’m curious about the first book and may go back to read it, but Paladin of Souls works perfectly well as a standalone.

Final Thoughts

Paladin of Souls was a fantastic read full of surprises, strong characters, and an original story. I loved the twists, the ragtag crew, and most of all, the way the book took a mature woman and gave her a second chance at life in a way that felt empowering and heartwarming.

If you’re looking for a creative and thought-provoking fantasy with unexpected turns, Paladin of Souls is definitely worth checking out.
