The Space Between Us: #MovieReview #scifi #sciencefiction

The Space Between Us starts off with an interesting premise, following the journey of the first human born on Mars as he travels to Earth in search of his father and experiences life outside of his Martian colony for the first time. However, the film quickly becomes bogged down by implausible plot points and a lackluster storyline.

One major issue is the premise itself, which requires a suspension of disbelief. The idea of a pregnant astronaut being allowed to go on a mission to Mars is realistically inaccurate. Astronauts are carefully monitored for health before being launched into space. I doubt a pregnancy would have slipped past the doctors. Whatev. We get to space and she has the baby. Of course, she dies in childbirth. Sorry, for that spoiler, but it’s not that interesting of a plot point. The child being raised on Mars is interesting. So we had to get through that absurdity to something interesting.

The kid, of course, wants to go to Earth. He’s a teenager now. Here, they stayed true to science. Mars has lower gravity, so he can’t go to Earth without dying. But eventually, they find a way to make a trip possible.

While the story briefly picks up once the protagonist, Gardner, arrives on Earth, it quickly becomes tedious as he and his love interest spend an excessive amount of time on the run from authorities. The film’s pacing suffers as a result, with long stretches of the movie feeling drawn out and unengaging.

Overall, while The Space Between Us may be of interest to fans of sci-fi romance films, it falls short in terms of logic and storytelling. It’s very predictable. Viewers who are willing to overlook its flaws may enjoy the film’s optimistic message about the power of human connection, but others may find themselves fast-forwarding through large parts of the movie like we did. The ending was satisfying. So, I’ll give it that. Still, it may take more than 3 beers to enjoy this one. The Husband Unit pretty much hated it, and even I got tired of it. Some crazy dance numbers would have helped… or land sharks… or dinosaurs eating people… maniacal robots… giant insects… a shorter sagging middle.. a few twists and turns… more logic… more time in space. Currently streaming on Netflix.

Okay, I probably didn’t make this sound appealing, but here’s the trailer:

Wakanda Forever: #MovieReview #scifi #sciencefiction

“Wakanda Forever” is a thrilling and action-packed addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that delivers on the promise of its predecessor, “Black Panther.” The film takes viewers back to the technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda, and explores the aftermath of T’Challa’s death.

One of the standout aspects of “Wakanda Forever” is its focus on strong and compelling female characters. The film centers around the character of Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, who steps up to lead Wakanda in the wake of her brother T’Challa’s death. Other notable female characters include Okoye, played by Danai Gurira, and Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o, who all play key roles in the story.

The tribute to the real-life death of Chadwick Boseman was really touching. The pain expressed by many of the actors seemed real, and it made the film richer.  So making his death part of the story took the Black Panther in new directions. It was not the typical, predictable Marvel Movie, which made me love it even more.

A new source of vibranium is found, which leads to an exciting chain of events that kept building and building. It is an exciting story in many ways – the action, the characters, their emotional journeys, the wonder, and the film has a lot of heart. A lot. The perspectives of the characters is not one-dimensional, which made the story all the more compelling.

This movie requires no beer to enjoy it. In fact, I plan on watching it again. If you loved Black Panther and Wonder Woman, you’re going to love this movie. It’s rare to get a great story with big action, so I would say this is one of Marvel’s best.

Blade Runner 2049: #MovieReview #scifi #science fiction

Blade Runner 2049 is a visually stunning film with impressive cinematography and a haunting score that effectively captures the dystopian future world it portrays. The acting performances were also solid, with Ryan Gosling delivering a strong lead performance as K, a replicant blade runner.

However, while the film was not terrible, I found myself somewhat disappointed with the character arc of the main character. While K starts off as an intriguing and sympathetic figure, I felt that his development throughout the film was somewhat lacking, and the climax of his story left me feeling unfulfilled. I was like, what? To me, it made his life seem pointless and sad. I wanted better than that.

Additionally, there were certain plot points and character motivations that didn’t make sense to me, and I found myself questioning the logic of certain events in the story. But I’m always willing to overlook that stuff if the story is good enough. If K’s story had ended better, I would have overlooked them.

Despite these criticisms, I still found Blade Runner 2049 to be a decent watch overall. I give it a 2 beer rating only because I didn’t like K’s story arc. Fans of the original Blade Runner film and those who enjoy atmospheric sci-fi films with strong visual aesthetics may still find plenty to appreciate in this sequel. I can’t remember where this was steaming… either Netflix, Paramount, or Hulu.

Moonfall: #SciFi #MovieReview

Overall, I found Moonfall to be an enjoyable sci-fi adventure. The plot was fast-paced and kept me engaged from start to finish. The visual effects were impressive and the performances of the actors were strong. It followed the usual disaster movie tropes… divorced people and teenagers, hero traumatized, and down on his and her luck. And, I do love my disaster movies.

However, I did have some issues with the film’s logic and accuracy. There were several plot points that seemed wildly implausible, and certain character motivations didn’t make sense to me. Additionally, I noticed several factual inaccuracies that took me out of the experience.

Despite these issues, I still had a good time watching Moonfall. Moonfall’s storyline hit many notes of other disaster movies and sci-fi films. Husband Unit and I kept yelling out movies we were reminded of. Because I love disaster movies and space, this was a fun time. Just be prepared to suspend your disbelief and overlook some of the film’s logical and factual shortcomings. They didn’t follow my advice to take a laptop with them. Therefore, I give this a one beer rating.

#ScienceFiction Worth Watching: Obi Wan Kenobi #StarWars

I recently watched the Obi Wan Kenobi series on Disney and was impressed with the quality of the storytelling and performances. The series takes place ten years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and follows Obi Wan as he tries to protect the secrets of the Jedi while living in self-imposed exile on Tatooine.

Ewan McGregor reprises his role as Obi Wan, and he delivers a standout performance as the iconic character. The supporting cast is also strong, with standout performances from Moses Ingram as a young scrapper named Katooni and Joel Edgerton as a familiar character from the Star Wars films.

The series explores the themes of redemption and responsibility, and it does so in a way that feels true to the spirit of the Star Wars franchise. The action sequences are well-done and the special effects are top-notch. Overall, I thought Obi Wan Kenobi was a great addition to the Star Wars universe and would highly recommend it to fans of the franchise. I give it a beer is optional rating despite the lack of dancing.
