The Angry Red Planet: #MovieReview #ScienceFiction

What to say about this one… First, I watch these movies so that you don’t have to.

Husband Unit and I both thought the lead actor, Colonel Tom, was annoying and creepy. If I met him in real life, I’d run away. Fast.

The special effects aren’t spectacular, and the storyline could have had some twists. It was a pretty straightforward plot. Rocket returns from Mars, female astronaut is too hysterical to speak, and something green is growing on Tom. We find out what happened on Mars via a flashback. As far as flashbacks go, it was better than most. It was the main story, and it was on Mars, so it wasn’t the boring kind.

What happened on Mars was pretty interesting, once we got past the boring bits of staring out the window a lot. There were some great monsters. I especially enjoyed the bat/rat/crab thing. The Martians then sent the rocket away with a warning not to come back. We had that warning from the Moon in another movie.

The acting was better than usual, the plot would have been better if they had emphasized the interesting bits and gotten rid of the boring parts, and the effects were below average. There was the helmet with no faceplate thing going on, too, and the spacesuits didn’t look like they’d protect anyone from a breeze.

The monsters take this from a 4 beer rating to a 3.5. If there had been more aliens/monsters, or dancing, or funny bits, the rating would be higher. Those cheesy moments were missing, however.

Wild and Wonderful Oregon: Eagle Rock #NaturePhotography #NatureBeauty

Eagle Rock is worth exploring in wild and wonderful Oregon.

In the Ochocos Mountains, Eagle Rock is an erosional remnant of a hardened volcanic ash deposit. You can climb up it, which I did. That was the easy part. Getting down was much harder. Knowing that, didn’t stop me. Luckily, I didn’t break myself. That would have been easy to do.

#SciFi Worth Reading: A Desolation Called Peace #BookReview #booklovers

Book 2 in the Teixcalaan series, A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine, is an exciting return to the Empire.  Detailed and imaginative, her world-building is extraordinary and thought-provoking.

Having enjoyed the first book, I was keen to delve into the second. I think this book is actually better than the first. Perhaps because I didn’t have to work as hard to understand the world and people she created. I already knew them. But I also think the story is better.

Mahit Dzmare and Three Seagrass team up once again to help negotiate with an enemy that inspires fear among the most hardened war veterans.

Don’t ask me how to pronounce a lot of names, but it was easy to fill in my own pronunciations, which I’m sure are very wrong. But that doesn’t matter. The story is beautiful and the language often aching. The Empire loves its poetry, and I feel as if the story immerses me in the culture of the Empire and that I see it through the lens of their poetry. It’s quite an extraordinary feat in writing.

I definitely recommend reading this one, especially if you liked the first, A Memory Called Empire.

Here’s the official description:

An alien armada lurks on the edges of Teixcalaanli space. No one can communicate with it, no one can destroy it, and Fleet Captain Nine Hibiscus is running out of options.

In a desperate attempt at diplomacy with the mysterious invaders, the fleet captain has sent for a diplomatic envoy. Now Mahit Dzmare and Three Seagrass—still reeling from the recent upheaval in the Empire—face the impossible task of trying to communicate with a hostile entity.

Their failure will guarantee millions of deaths in an endless war. Their success might prevent Teixcalaan’s destruction—and allow the empire to continue its rapacious expansion.

Or it might create something far stranger . . .
